Frequently Asked Questions
How much do the classes cost?
$14.00 each week, is what you will pay for one adult class. We do not charge block fees for our social classes. The only time a block fee will be charged is for a workshop. If any one student wants to attend two classes on the same night, you will need to pay $24.00.
What should I wear to class? Any special shoes to wear?
Casual wear is what most people come in and some dress up. Regardless, it's a dance class, so you should be comfortable! The only solid tip is to avoid wearing shoes with lots of grip. You will be turning, so you need to wear shoes with a leather or suede sole. Runners are ok, but make it difficult to move your feet. Also avoid wearing a slip on shoe these prove very awkward and tend to get in the way.
Which Classes should I take? Are they all the same?
All our classes are different! Our beginners and improvers classes are a set syllabus. Our intermediate class is an open syllabus. We aim to progress the dance student trough the levels at a comfortable learning pace. You will start with the basic elements of salsa dancing, then progress through the levels until you are a very confident salsa dancer with a large step pattern repertoire.
How long will it take me to become a good salsa dancer?
This is difficult to answer! We are asked this question a lot, however everyone learns differently. Some people learn slow and steady and some people have natural ability and learn a lot quicker. In general it takes about eight weeks to complete our beginners syllabus. By this stage you will have all you need to get onto the dance floor. Our improver syllabus takes 24 weeks to complete. It is longer, because in this level you have a lot to learn about variations, improvements, styling and lead and follow techniques. Our intermediate syllabus is open and you will continually learn new combinations and dance techniques to help build your repertoire.
Do I need a partner?
No absolutely not! We rotate partners in class. If we have an imbalance (lets face it, there are always more women then men) extra people just wait in between couples and will get a partner in a few minutes.
I have my own partner, do I have to swap?
No problem! However rotating partners is not solely for social reasons. It helps the learning process. It's necessary to properly learn how to lead and follow. Everyone has a different style, and changing partners will greatly enhance the speed at which you learn. That being said, you can always remove yourself slightly from the circle and not change partners.
I have two left feet and never danced before, will I stand out?
No you won't! In fact you will be surrounded by people, like you, who have never danced. Now is the time to learn, don't put it off any longer. Our beginners class is aimed at students just like you. We make it fun and simple to learn. As for the two left feet, I would be a very rich woman if I had a dollar for everytime I've heard this, so looks like your not alone.
What if I miss the start of the eight week block?
You can still join! Many people miss the first, second or even third week. We are always available for private lessons to catch you up before hand, or feel free to come in early to class and run through the basics before the class starts. We also have a dedicated social practice sessions before and after some classes, so this is another good time to catch up with an instructor for extra help. After the fourth week we recommend waiting till the next block.
Anything else I need to know about classes or how to prepare, what to bring?
Bring a desire to learn and be prepared to have fun. A few little extras you might find handy is a sweat towel, notepaper and pen. We supply water and breath mints in case your worried about bad breath.
For a Beginner Dancer, what is the fastest way to learn?
The fastest way to learn is to take a combined approach of social classes, private lessons and social dance outings. When practicing remember to count! Just like in class, take every opportunity to count and grasp the rhythm. Finding a partner to practice with helps and did I mention practice?
How much, and how long, are Private Lessons?
Privates are generally $55 per person and last for one hour. We do offer special rates to cater for couples or package deals, so it is best to speak to an instructor and tell them what you want.
Do I really need private lessons?
I recommend everyone start with at least one group session! Take a group class first, and start learning some of the basics and the fundamentals. That way, you'll get far more out of your private lessons. Don't substitute privates for group classes! They work best together rather than individually. You'll want to take your first private within your first 2 months of dancing (before bad habits have a chance to develop).
Can I still take a private lesson without attending group classes?
Yes absolutely. People want private lessons for many reasons. Some can't make the group class, some want to learn just for a wedding or those who just want to fast track before an overseas holiday. Contact us to make arrangements.
